Installing Big Brake Rotors
|
Jack up the rear of the vehicle and place it on
jack stands and remove the rear wheels Remove the 2 bolts securing the caliper dust shield (10mm socket) Remove the 2 bolts securing the caliper to the caliper bracket (12mm wrench) and remove the brake pads, remembering their placement. Remove the bracket that secures the emergency brake cable to the control arm. Remove the two bolts securing the caliper bracket to the control arm (14mm wrench) Remove the 2 screws securing the rotor to the hub. You may need to loosen them with a hammer and chisel or an impact screwdriver if you have one. Bolt the supplied caliper relocation bracket to where the stock bracket was bolted. Remove any rust or dirt from the surface of the hub. Install the new rotor and tighten the screws. Bolt the caliper bracket to the extension bracket. Re install the emergency brake cable bracket to the control arm Sand down the surface of the brake pads with a fine grit paper until their surface is smooth. Place the brake pads into the caliper bracket in the original position. Install the caliper, if it won't fit over the pads, turn the caliper piston clockwise with a flat screwdriver. Then tighten the two bolts that held the caliper on. Re install the caliper dust shield. Jack up the front of the car and place it on jack stands. Remove the front wheels. Remove the two bolts that secure the caliper to the caliper bracket (12mm wrench) Remove the 2 bolts that secure the brake line to the strut. Remove the caliper bracket from the knuckle (17mm wrench) Remove the front rotor the same as you did with the rear. Sand down the surface where the caliper bracket bolts to the front knuckle. Install the caliper relocation bracket to the knuckle. Test fit the caliper to the new bracket, you may need to grind down the surface of the caliper to line up the bolts properly. Sand off any rust from the surface of the hub and remove any dirt. Install the new brake rotor and tighten the screws. Check to make sure the backing plate doesn't rub against the rotor. Sand down the surface of the front brake pads with a fine sandpaper till the surface is smooth. Re install the brake pads in the same positions as they were removed. Install the brake caliper, you may need to squeeze the caliper piston back using either channel locks or a C clamp. Install the new bracket for the brake line, where you removed the stock one previously. Bolt the stock bracket to the one you just installed. Turn the wheel from side to side to make sure the brake line moves freely and does not stretch. Install the front wheels and recheck the rear wheels to be sure. Before driving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal several times until it goes hard to move the caliper pistons out against the brake pads. Pull up on the emergency brake lever several times Until the brake pads re seat the rotors may show uneven wear.
